GREENHOUSE EFFECT "PRECARIOUS" LIVE 1989 AT THE MUSIC MACHINE SANTA MONICA CALIFORNIA - In February 1988, G.e. released their debut Cassette "Global Warming" and the tape was an immediate smash hit all across the United States ,... ( and also of course around their local hometown areas of Redondo Beach and Torrance CA ) in the "Underground" scenes of Underground music , Punk rock, metal, and Psychedelia ,.. "Our album was an immediate success and I figured the soon to come next thing was gonna be ,..We were gonna be signed to some indie label ,..and then become Lords of the Underground ( Laughs )" Says Clark Hagins in September 2021 for Rock City Productions Blogging. But way back then, and after listening to his own music on his home stereo, Hagins ( and Guitarist Phil Keegan ) both felt that their band was ready for much "Bigger things." "We heard the tape enough and played it to our friends who were all blown away by it and we began to change our views on G.e. ,.. We were soon thinking that we could get signed to a major label deal like say Capital or EMI or Geffen Records ,..We truly believed that" Says Haggins.
The band soon were printing up thousands upon thousands of cassettes and handing them out to "virtually everybody in L.A" ,.... "Uh ,..like candy" Says Haggins. But the band soon found the record labels not very receptive to their "underground modern psychedelia" ideas. "Our first album was amazing and quite bizarre" barks Haggins in 2021. "The whole thing was packed with like these awesome songs and "Precarious", 'Number One', and 'Think About it" ( the Yardbirds cover ) ,..seemed to be the powerful three songs that DROVE the entire project!",.... But a "Hit single" near the end of the album would soon emerge and that was of course "The Magic Man' which was a track Hagins wrote lyrics to that seemed to honor his school teaching mother Jo Anne Hagins. "The Magic Man" started out as this funky brilliant guitar idea by Phil Keegan ,..kinda like Zeppelin or somethin" says Haggins. "But then I added these clashing lyrics and I invented this very weird melody that floated over Keegan's guitar,.. it was amazing" Says Haggins. After several months, a couple of curious major label A & R people contacted Hagins at his address in Redondo Beach ,..they seemed to come with "rejection yet also interest" ,... "It was very weird,.." Says Hagins. "Nobody wanted to sign us ,..some even had the nerve to tell me that at age 23, we were way too old to be signed ( LOL ) and shit like that ,..but they seemed very damn curious about the band and in particular; THE SOUND AND IMAGE OF THE BAND ! HAGINS RECALLS; "We called our music hard rock or alternative hard rock or Psychedelic metal or garage metal ,... but we also used this other term and quite often ,..it was something we picked up from our love of 1970's Music and stuff like Neil Young and the Stooges ,.. We called our music ,.. and quite proudly ,..we called it GRUNGE" SAYS HAGINS.
IN 1988 AND 89, THE band found success at local live concerts, often playing with many other bands on a bill. "Everybody would say that WE WERE ALWAYS THE BEST BAND" Says Hagins ,.. "We were clearly some sorts of originators, inventors,.. although stuff like the Chocolate Watchband and 13th Floor Elevators, Yardbirds, and such had already been done,..and long ago too !" ( Laughs ),.. G.E. were a three piece band ! Hagins and Keegan seemed to be the attraction as they battled onstage for more attention than the other all while funny looking goofy red headed bassist Rick Carmody seemed to be some sort of comic relief but as he also played a mean four string in the process. "When we got to that gig at the Santa Monica MUSIC MACHINE, I REMEMBER THAT NIGHT extremely well " Says Hagins ,.. "We played with a bunch of bands that night and the crowd was going nuts for the other bands,..We played last and the place was packed ,, yet I remember,..the huge crowd were mostly silent ,..very attentive ,..almost as if they were carefully judging and scrutinizing our music and our band as a whole "( Laughs ) ,.... Hagins today says that he feels THE MUSIC MACHINE GIG really wasn't one of G.e's best but it was very typical ; "THAT is how we were every night WE WERE TIGHT !,... We were one of those three piece bands but with a drummer singer ,.. and I think we pulled it off much better than other bands trying to do stuff like that !,.... I was always deeply committed and interested in three piece groups ,.. The Minutemen were definitely an idol of mine but there was this band called A NOISE AGENCY from Lomita California ,... and these guys were the most amazing three piece band ever,... I wanted to copy everything they did AND I DID TOO ! ,..MY WHOLE TIME jamming drums with G.e. I wanted to be a frontman guitarist , singing in a three piece,.. and it was all because of the band that I feel INVENTED EVERYTHING FOR THE 1990'S ,.. AND THAT BAND WAS A NOISE AGENCY !!!" Hagins cites ANA's 1985 album on Gnat Breath Records "Moms in the Kitchen" as probably one of his main musical influences outside of stuff like David Bowie and the Beatles, etc,.. "Those songs were sad,..very sullen and the singer seemed to be this way confused mixed up weird dude,.. I tried to meet the guy best I could and I even managed to hang out with them one night before and after one of their shows and the dude was just so rock n roll cool ,..he despised me !!" ( Laughs ) ,... It was around this time that Hagins made the acquaintance of this Musician guy he would often see around Los Angeles Sunset Strip while passing out flyers ,..and even down in the South Bay ,.. the guy was future Geffen A & R Rep Craig Aaronson ,..and of all the people who took a huge keen interest in G.e. ,.. there was NO ONE MORE INTERESTED IN THE BAND ,... "THAN THAT GUY" Says Hagins.
